Many people think of personal training as a way to improve strength, lose weight, or build fitness. But research shows that regular exercise (even just one structured session each week!) can also have a powerful impact on mental health. A weekly gym session can boost mood, reduce stress, increase confidence, and help build better daily lifestyle habits.
Research on exercise and mood
Scientists have consistently found that physical activity improves mental wellbeing. Studies show that exercise can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety while improving overall mood and emotional resilience.
Large reviews of research involving more than 100,000 participants have found that people who exercise regularly experience greater improvements in symptoms of mild to moderate depression compared with those who remain sedentary.
Physical activity affects the brain in several ways:
- It releases endorphins, chemicals that improve feelings of wellbeing.
- It helps break cycles of negative thinking by focusing attention on movement and effort.
- It strengthens mental resilience and emotional balance over time.
These effects mean that even modest, regular activity can have noticeable psychological benefits!
Why a weekly personal training sessions helps
A PT session combines exercise with structure, accountability, and support.
1. Accountability makes it happen
One of the biggest blocks I hear to exercise is simply getting started. A scheduled session with a PT creates a commitment that is harder to skip. A weekly session can therefore act as a reliable “anchor” that keeps movement in your weekly routine.
2. Professional coaching builds confidence
Working with a skilled trainer removes uncertainty about what to do in the gym. Instead of guessing, you receive clear guidance and achievable goals through a personal program created just for you.
Research shows that reaching exercise goals (no matter how big or small they are) can increase self-confidence and self-esteem. Over time, this sense of progress can improve overall mood and motivation.
3. Exercise changes your brain chemistry
This one is really cool. Physical activity triggers biological processes that influence mental health. For example, exercise stimulates the release of endorphins and other brain chemicals linked to improved mood and reduced stress. Some studies also suggest exercise increases levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports brain health and cognitive function. (check studies below)
These physiological effects can help explain why people often feel better after a workout.
4. Sacred me-time and structure reduce stress
In a busy week, a personal training session can be a 'sacred' time for physical and mental reset, time just for you, where attention is paid only to you. Exercise is known to reduce fatigue, improve concentration, and help regulate stress responses. Even one structured session per week can create a pause from the daily pressure/stress and provide a healthy outlet for tension.
5. Social interaction improves well-being
Personal training sessions are not just about exercise, they also involve human interaction (something AI can never replace). Research shows that social engagement during physical activity can enhance mood benefits and increase motivation. For some people, the encouragement and conversation with a trainer can be as valuable as the workout itself. I certainly enjoy chatting with my clients and hear all of their stories (otherwise coaching would be pretty monotonous..)
Just one weekly session for better habits
A weekly session can also be the starting point for broader lifestyle changes. Exercise habits often develop gradually, and personalised guidance helps people maintain consistency over time. Once this exercise becomes a solid part of the weekly routine, people often begin adding more activity on their own such as walking, stretching, or additional gym sessions: Naturally you might also start eating healthier and make healthier choices in areas such sleep, work-life balance and social circles.
So.. Go for it!
A weekly personal training session may seem like a small commitment, but it can deliver very meaningful mental health benefits. So to summarise, a weekly PT session can..
- Improve mood
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Increase confidence
- Build sustainable exercise habits
For many people, that single hour each week can be the starting point for both physical and emotional wellbeing.
